Sandy Hochel

Aiken has been Sandy’s home since 1973, and she and her husband (now deceased) raised their two daughters here. Sandy was a Communications Professor at the University of South Carolina Aiken for 29 years and retired in 2002. She has a Ph.D. in Communications from Purdue University.

Since retiring, she has taught abroad twice and volunteered her time in many ways. She currently teaches English as a Second Language and Citizenship Preparation courses and works with the Aiken Homeless Coalition. 

She is an active member of the Aiken Unitarian Universalist church; she says that social justice and service are important components of her faith. She strongly believes in equity and compassion in human relations and in doing what she can to make her corner of the world a better place. When she first heard about Family
Promise she was impressed with its mission and is honored to work with it.
